Specs are creative constraints
▾
Snapchat's common ad formats use vertical 9:16 creative, with .mp4, .mov, .jpg, or .png files depending on the format.1 Published resolution figures vary by format and spec-sheet revision (720×1280 and 1080×1920 both appear). The exact requirements belong to the placement. Check the current format page before export.
The useful question is not “Does this file upload?” It is “Can the viewer understand the ad after the interface, captions, CTA, and thumb-speed reading have taken their share of the screen?”
Protect the safe zones
▾
Snapchat's creative guidance says to keep the top 150 pixels and bottom 330 pixels clear of key graphics or logos.2 Those areas are where interface elements can compete with the message.
A safe zone protects the message from collisions. It does not solve a crowded composition. Use the screen intentionally:
- Top region: short opening claim only when it remains clear of UI.
- Center region: product, face, demonstration, or primary proof.
- Lower-middle: supporting captions or secondary information.
- Protected edges: no critical copy, logos, pricing, disclaimers, or CTAs.
Specs by format
▾
| Format | Key creative requirements |
|---|---|
| Single Image or Video | 9:16; .mp4, .mov, .jpg, or .png; 3–180 seconds. |
| Story Ad | 9:16; 3–180 seconds; each card works as part of a sequence. |
| Commercial | 9:16; 3–180 seconds; first six seconds are non-skippable. |
| Sponsored Snap | 9:16; up to 180 seconds; Snapchat recommends under 10 seconds; keep the headline short (spec sheets put the recommended length in the mid-20s of characters). |
| AR Lens | Visible brand name or logo required; keep it out of obstructed UI and lower carousel zones. |
Write for a phone, not a monitor
▾
Use:
- Large text.
- High contrast.
- Short phrasing.
- One thought at a time.
- Enough screen time to read.
- Visual proof instead of dense explanation.
If a legal disclosure must be included, build the composition around it. Do not shrink the disclosure until it technically fits. Small type is a creative failure with legal consequences attached.
Pre-flight checklist
▾
- Is the asset the correct 9:16 format?
- Is critical content away from the protected top and bottom zones?
- Does the first-frame hook remain readable?
- Is the product or person centered and visible?
- Are captions separated from the product demonstration?
- Is the CTA easy to find and read?
- Is the format-specific length and file type correct?
- Does the asset still make sense with sound muted?
